FIRST LEGO League Explore - Uncovering the world with fun

FIRST LEGO League Explore is designed for elementary school children aged 6 to 10. Each year, students, either in teams or as an entire class, dive into an exciting topic in science and technology. Along the way, they playfully explore the world of programming using a LEGO® Education robotics set and create a motorized LEGO model.

The focus is on the FIRST Core Values, which promote respectful interaction, shared experiences, and critical thinking.

At the end of the season, teams and classes present their results at a regional exhibition, exchange ideas, and share lots of fun together!

How Participation Works

Participation as a Team

A team consists of two to six children aged 6 to 10 and is guided by an adult facilitator (e.g., a teacher or parent). The team can be formed in a school, after-school program, library, club, or private setting. Over a period of at least 12 weeks, the children meet regularly to work on exciting projects and build LEGO models. Together, they explore various topics, develop creative ideas, and collaborate closely. At the end of the season, the team presents its results at a regional exhibition, where other teams also showcase their projects.

Participation as a Class

For school classes with up to 30 students, FIRST LEGO League Explore offers a flexible solution. The teacher integrates the program into the curriculum, allowing the entire class to work in small project teams. Using the provided robotics sets and materials, the children collaboratively explore various topics and build their own LEGO models. The highlight is an internal school exhibition where students present their work. Additionally, one class team can participate in an official Explore Exhibition to exchange ideas with other teams and showcase their projects.

Registration

You can register your Explore team or school class for the new season annually starting in late April/early May. Teams can register up to four weeks before their chosen regional exhibition, provided there are still spots available in that region. School classes have the flexibility to register year-round and can integrate the program into their curriculum independently of regional exhibition dates. This allows plenty of time to find the perfect starting point. Register now!

Costs

The participation fees for FIRST LEGO League Explore vary depending on whether you register as a team or a school class:
Team Participation: €165 plus shipping (Germany: €14; Austria: €25; Switzerland: €42)
Class Participation: €505 plus shipping (Germany: €45; Austria: €84; Switzerland: €113).

Additional Materials: The SPIKE Essential Robotics Set

To participate in FIRST LEGO League Explore, you will need a LEGO Education robotics set in addition to the materials we provide. We recommend the LEGO Education SPIKE Essential Set, as it is perfectly aligned with the program's requirements and the educational curriculum. Teams need one set, while 3 to 5 sets are ideal for classes.

The robotics set can be reused for future FIRST LEGO League Explore seasons and other STEM projects. It offers a wide range of building elements and learning units, making the learning process exciting and hands-on.

Alternatively, you can also use the LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 Robotics Set. If you have any questions or need information on purchasing options, we are happy to help!

Evaluation and Awards

In FIRST LEGO League Explore, team achievements are celebrated at both regional exhibitions and internal classroom showcases. At regional exhibitions, experienced reviewers evaluate the models, research posters, and teamwork, ensuring every team receives recognition. In the classroom, teachers organize internal showcases where students present their projects and are also acknowledged for their efforts. In both settings, the focus is on learning, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.
