Future Edition in practice: insights from Houston

In this recurring section, we regularly take a look at the development of the FIRST® LEGO® League Future Edition and what is useful for teams in preparation. Shortly before the kickoff in August, it is worth revisiting the showcase at the FIRST Championship in Houston in early May. There, four pilot teams (including rhsRobotiX from Braunschweig) were able to test the new Future Edition 8+ game concept under real competition conditions.

At the centre were the four clearly defined team roles: driver, operator, technician and specialist. Each role takes on specific tasks at the field and actively contributes to the gameplay. One key innovation became especially clear: teams no longer just start their robots, but actively intervene in the game using self-developed technical and mechanical tools.

The impressions from Houston show how the role structure strengthens collaboration, communication and problem-solving within teams, and how the programme is evolving towards a more interactive and cooperative format without losing its core identity.
