Judging at Challenge & Explore – Here’s How It Works

by Stefanie Sieber

Explore:

The review process at an Explore exhibition takes about 15 minutes and is part of the event’s official schedule.

First, the children present their team model and poster (around 5 minutes). The reviewers look at the team’s research topic, model design, and collaboration. They then ask questions and give appreciative feedback, ensuring that every child gets a chance to speak.

Unlike Challenge, Explore is not a competition – the focus is on sharing and recognition. At the end, each team receives an individual award highlighting their special strengths or creative ideas.

Challenge:

On competition day, all teams are judged in the categories Research, Robot Design, and Teamwork. Each team takes part in a 35-minute judging session, which coaches and spectators may also attend.

The judging process follows a standardized procedure to ensure fair conditions for all teams. After your presentation, the judges deliberate privately and complete the official judging rubric, which you’ll receive after the event or can request from your regional partner.

To prepare, visit our website for rubrics, videos, and the official judging guide: Judging Resources – Challenge

Use these materials – especially the rubrics – early on when developing your research project and robot design to understand what the judges will be looking for.

Good luck – and happy researching, tinkering, and building!
