Oceans in Focus: Shape Your Research in the SUBMERGED Season

by Stefanie Sieber

This year’s FIRST LEGO League research project revolves around the fascinating theme of oceans and seas. Even if your team doesn't have direct access to an ocean, you have the opportunity to actively participate in this exciting research project. Oceans cover over 70% of the Earth's surface and are vital for our planet. They influence the climate, the food chain, and many other aspects of life. Therefore, it is crucial to better understand and protect their delicate ecosystems. This season, you can step into the role of researchers and learn about their challenges in exploring the oceans.

Identifying and Investigating Problems

Your challenge is to identify a specific problem faced by those who research the oceans and to thoroughly explore this problem and its possible solutions. The variety of topics is vast: for instance, you could help marine biologists track large fish schools more effectively in their research or assist oceanographers in improving methods for collecting and analyzing artifacts from the deep-sea zone (see the Sparks for Research on page 6 of the Engineers' Notebook). Alternatively, you can tackle an entirely different problem faced by another group of researchers. Utilize various resources to engage deeply with your topic. A helpful starting point is the Engineers' Notebook as well as the videos available at FIRST LEGO League Challenge Resources.

Access to Experts and Exchange

To research your problem and consult on developing your solution, you can reach out to universities and research institutes that focus on ocean research. For example, at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, there are opportunities for young people to pursue their own research questions “underwater” with the support of experts. Additionally, even “inland,” you can find research institutions addressing ocean research questions, such as the biology institutes at various universities, where researchers are engaged with marine biological inquiries. If you don’t have direct access to experts, you can utilize platforms like Skype a Scientist or the special SUBMERGED offerings from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to connect with scientists. These contacts can provide you with valuable insights and deepen your inquiries. This can not only enhance your understanding of the topic but also offer fresh inspiration for innovative solutions.

Teamwork and Creative Solutions

During your research work, your team will develop a plan to test and, ideally, implement your ideas. It’s not just about solving a problem but also about collaboration and the development of your team. Your solutions could address the challenges of the oceans as well as generate innovations for life on land. We are excited to see the creative, innovative, and impactful ideas you will develop in the SUBMERGED season!
